SHIN PAD GUIDE
In today's modern game of football no matter which level it is played at, all players need to wear shin pads, not only because the game has gotten quicker and the timing of some players shall we say, is not up to scratch. It is because of the potential for serious injury and it’s also written into the law of the game under law 4 of the FA which state’s that -
Shin pads are to be fully covered by the players socks.
The material that the shin pads must be made of rubber, plastic or a similar material .
The shin pads must give the wearer an acceptable amount protection.
Shin Guard types
SHIN GUARD SLIP-INS
This type of guard is lightweight and compact and fits right under your football socks.
This type of shin pad tends to move around or slip down so you need to fix it into place with tape or a compression sleeve.
Slip-in shin guards are made up of hard plastic or carbon which has a foam impact backing.
Slip-in shin guards are small in coverage so don't cover a large area of your shin so keep that in mind when you are buying shin guards, on the plus side they tend to be cheaper than the other types.
STRAP SHIN GUARDS
This type of shin pad is similar to the slip-in guard but it is secured by a velcro strap at the top of the guard.
The outer part of the shin pad is made out of plastic and has a soft padding on the shin side to reduce impact.
It is an easy shin guard to put on or off and your sock over the top to help hold it from moving up or down.
ANKLE SHIN GUARD
This type of shin guard offers more protection around the ankle by providing padding on either side of the ankle as well as covering all of the shin.
The ankle shin guard has a loop at the bottom of the guard usually made of an elastic fabric that you put your foot into and secured at the bottom of your heel.
The ankle shin guards have a hard plastic outer shell which has a soft padding on the back which reduces the impact onto your shin.
The top of the shin pad is secured by a velcro strap that goes around the calf.
SLEEVE SHIN GUARDS
This shin pad is built into the sleeve or sock which makes it easy to put on.
The shin pad comprises a hard plastic or rubber with padding behind it to reduce impact on the shin.
This shin guard is aimed at kids as they are easy to wear.
